Our guide to the Auckland Ferries


There are a number of Auckland ferries, run by Fullers, that enable you to travel to many of Auckland's destination Islands including Waiheke and Rangitoto, the two most visited islands.  The main Auckland ferry terminal is located on Quay Street. 

There are also the commuter type ferries run by Auckland Transport with regular services inluding the likes of connecting Devonport with Auckland. 

Sealink operate a passenger and car ferry service to both Waiheke Island and Great Barrier Island.

Tickets for the various ferry services include cash for single-trip paper tickets, monthly passes, multi-trip tickets or an AT HOP card which offers a cheaper alternative to cash.

Auckland to Waiheke Island

Ferries run approximately every hour.  A number of crossings include a stop at Devonport, which adds 10 minutes to the crossing time.  For a modest extra fee, you can purchase a pass with your ferry ticket and enjoy unlimited travel on the buses around the island.  The ferry crossing lasts about 35 minutes.  Book Tickets.

Auckland to Rangitoto Island

This 25 minute ferry trip departs daily at 9.15am, 10.30am and 12.30pm. It departs from Devonport at 9.25am and 12.25pm.  The last ferry from the Island to Auckland departs at 3.30pm weekdays and 5.00pm on Saturday, Sundays and public holidays.  Book Tickets.

Auckland to Great Barrier Island

This 2.5 hour ferry trip is a seasonal experience, with trips departing over the Christmas period, into early January and over Easter. Reservations are essential. From February to April, the price drops.  Book Tickets.

Auckland to Rotorua Island

Rotoroa Island is a unique arts, heritage and conservation island and can be visited for a full day or a half day.  While on the island, you can explore the island’s network of trails and look out points, pristine white sand beaches, art  installations and rich history.  Book Tickets.

Regular 'Commuter' Ferry Services:

Ferry services are part of the Auckland Transport Metro integrated fare system.  This means if you use the AT HOP Card you can catch a bus or train (at the start or end of your ferry journey) and pay no more than just the ferry fare if you’re in the same zone.

Auckland to Devonport

The short 12 minute crossing departs every 30 minutes although early morning and evening times may vary.  The first ferry leaves Auckland at 6.15am with the last at 11.15pm during the week (Monday to Thursday).  On Friday and Saturday nights you can catch the last ferry at 1.00am.  On Sunday the last ferry to Devonport is 10.00pm. 

Auckland to Half Moon Bay

The ferries leave for Half Moon Bay approximately every couple of hours until around 4.00pm when it's then every hour.  At the weekend, it runs every 3 hours with the last ferry leaving at 4.30pm.  A bus service connects to the ferries at Half Moon Bay Marina.  The ferry crossing time is 40 minutes.

Auckland to Birkenhead

The 15 minute ferry crossing departs daily from 7.15am until 11.10pm during the week, while at the weekend and Bank Holidays the last ferry departs from Auckland at 10.10pm. 

Auckland to Bayswater

Departs daily from 6.55am until 11.10pm during the week with the last ferry on the weekend and Bank Holidays leaving at 10.10pm.

How to Pay For Ferry Tickets

You can purchase 'paper' tickets at ticket machines at the ferry terminals with basic instructions here.  Cash can be used to purchase a paper ticket for train and ferry travel only.   Ticket machines are located at ferry terminals across the network, except Northcote Point.  Passengers on this service will need to purchase a ticket when they depart or arrive at the Downtown Ferry Terminal.

Or, you can purchase an AT HOP Card to travel on buses, trains and ferries all on the one card.  Using an AT HOP card is cheaper and faster than cash fares.  It provides at least a 25% discount off single trip cash fares, excluding the Waiheke ferry service.  You can use AT HOP on all Auckland Transport ferry services except Rakino.  It's best to buy a ticket before you board or, tag on with your AT HOP card for your travel. 

Where To Buy AT HOP Card

You can purchase AT HOP cards online, from lots of retailers across the city, ticket and top-up machines across Auckland including the AT Customer Service Centre and Pier 1 at the Downtown Ferry Terminal.  

You can buy your blue AT HOP card online. You can only buy the gold AT HOP card in person and only if you are eligible for one.  Purchase price for an AT HOP card is usually $10.
